Forensic Mental Health assessment and court reports

Ivy House Healthcare Forensic Mental Health assessments for court are conducted by Declan Ryan, our Clinic Director, a senior Advanced Practice Nurse and Clinical Nurse Consultant in forensic mental health.

All our clients will receive a written comprehensive psychiatric medico-legal report that includes a clinical impression, recommendations for court diversion (if appropriate) and a workable, meaningful treatment plan.

We work in a timely manner to ensure that all required documentation will be provided to you or to your legal representative well before your next scheduled court appearance.

We are happy to work with your legal representative at all stages of the court process or if you require help finding legal representatives who specialise in mental health matters we share our premises with a legal firm.

Our clinic is located near the Wollongong Local Courts, however we also offer Forensic Mental Health appointments offsite in the Wollongong, South Coast and Greater Sydney Areas

If you need a virtual appointment, for example if you are in a custodial setting, we also offer audio-visual consultations.

Section 14 Mental Health Applications

If you suffer from a mental health condition, mental illness, and/or cognitive impairment, you may be eligible for consideration of a Section 14 of the NSW Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020 by the court.

Our experienced team will support and guide you through the process, thoroughly preparing an assessment of your mental health or cognitive impairment, writing a Medico-legal Mental Health Assessment and working in partnership with your legal team to persuasively present your case in court.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Forensic Mental Health Assessment is a comprehensive medico-legal assessment and evaluation that provides relevant clinical information (Forensic Mental Health Court Report) to your legal representative, prosecutor, and the courts.

A Section 14 is a section from the NSW Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020.

It is used by the local courts to consider whether your court matter would be better dealt with by diversion into treatment rather than judicially at law.

A Section 14 Treatment Plan is a plan made in consultation with your treatment provider and yourself whereby you agree to engage and comply with treatment for the duration of the Section 14 order.

Your treatment provider has a responsibility to inform the court should you fail to comply with the treatment plan.
